RaeLynn Becomes A Diabetes Patient Ambassador

RaeLynn has partnered with the pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk and its Patient Ambassador Education Program to help encourage, motivate and support people living with type 1 diabetes. RaeLynn was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when she was twelve years old, and she hopes that by sharing her own personal story she’ll empower others living with the disease. RaeLynn says, “I plan to use my role as a diabetes patient ambassador to teach people with diabetes that it shouldn’t hinder them from following their dreams. I am living proof that this can happen.”

As a diabetes patient ambassador, RaeLynn will actively participate in various community and educational events around the country to educate and empower patients.

June 30th: On This Day

On this day in 1993, Kenny Chesney signed his first recording contract, with Capricorn Records. Chesney released one album under the banner, In My Wildest Dreams. The album produced two singles that hit the Billboard Country charts:  “The Tin Man” at number 70 and “Whatever It Takes” at number 59.

After this album, Chesney moved to BNA Records and released his second album, All I Need to Know. All I Need to Know would be end up being Certified Gold.

Darlington Raceway Names New President

Kerry Tharp has been named president of Darlington Raceway, replacing Chip Wile – who had accepted the track president’s position at Daytona International Speedway in April. Both facilities are owned by International Speedway Corporation, parent company of MRN. Tharp most recently served as senior director of racing communications for NASCAR.

He is a native of Louisville, Kentucky, and joined NASCAR in 2005 after twenty years as the associate athletic director for media relations at the University of South Carolina in Columbia.

Brandy Clark Causing Quite The Conversation With Her New Album

Brandy Clark is causing quite the conversation with her new album, Big Day In A Small Town that debuted in the top ten on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart. Brandy continues to prove the June 10th release is a strong follow-up to her critically-acclaimed debut album, 12 Stories, when it was recently place on Rolling Stone’s 45 Best Albums of 2016 So Far.

Oskaloosa City Council Agenda For July 5th

The Oskaloosa City Council will hold their next regular meeting Tuesday, July 5th in City Council Chambers of City Hall at 6 pm… Items on the agenda include:
Consideration of a resolution scheduling a public hearing on the vacation and sale of an unused section of public right-of-way lying between 1002 South E Street and 602 9th Avenue West and referring this request to the Planning & Zoning Commission.
Consideration of a resolution approving the temporary closure of South 1st Street between High Avenue East and 1st Avenue East from 4:30 PM to 9:00 PM on July 14 and August 4 for the Oskaloosa Municipal Band event.
Consideration of a resolution approving the temporary closure of South 1st Street between High Avenue East and 1st Avenue East from 3:00 PM to 9:00 PM on July 23, 2016 for an Oskaloosa Main Street Event.
Consideration of a resolution approving the 2017 Citywide Storm Sewer Intake Repairs Project.
Consideration of a resolution levying a special assessment against private property for cleanup of a property located at 513 South H Street
Consideration of a resolution approving the plans, specifications, form of contract, and estimated cost for the West Mall (Hy-Vee) Parking Lot Rehabilitation Project.
Consideration of a resolution approving the 15th Avenue West and Edmundson Drive Sidewalk Project.
And Consideration of an ordinance to change the parking restrictions along C Avenue East from North 11th Street to South Park Avenue – 2nd Reading.

June 29th: On This Day

On this day in 2012, Blake Shelton received a Double-Platinum Certification for his single “Honey Bee”. The song was Blake’s fist single from his sixth studio album Red River Blue. “Honey Bee” sold 138,000 digital downloads it’s first week, setting a new record for first week downloads by a male country singer. Because of these download numbers, “Honey Bee” debuted at number thirteen on the Billboard Hot 100, making him the highest-debuting male country artist on that chart since Garth Brooks.

The song received a Grammy Nomination for Best Country Solo Performance, but lost to Taylor Swift’s “Mean”.

It has since been Certified Triple-Platinum.

Suspect Arrested For Shots Fired In Ottumwa

On June 28, 2016 at 2:56 pm, the Ottumwa Police Department received a report of a shot fired in the 900 block of Center Avenue in Ottumwa. Upon officers arriving at the scene they were advised that a domestic disturbance had taken place at a residence located at 902 Center Avenue between a father and his step-son. The disturbance continued outside the residence. During the incident the step-son later identified as Ryan Lawrence Gillen, age 20 of 902 Center Avenue, fired one round from a handgun toward his step-father. Gillen then fled the area on foot. Officers were unable to locate Gillen at that time.

At 9:07 pm, a Wapello County Deputy Sheriff located a vehicle driven by Gillen in the 400 block of Hamilton Street. Gillen was taken into custody at that time and charged with Going Armed with Intent, Carry Weapons, Assault with Use of Firearms and Reckless Use of a Firearm.

Gillen is currently being held in the Wapello County Jail on $5000 bond.

Police Department Looking Into Garden Ornament Theft Cases

Over this past weekend, the Oskaloosa Police Department and the Mahaska County Sheriff’s Office has received several calls for service involving the theft of high value yard and garden ornaments. The Oskaloosa Police Department is asking for the publics help in these theft cases. Currently the Oskaloosa Police Department has taken reports of two brass horse heads mounted on black cast iron posts and a large cast iron dinner bell painted silver with "Oskaloosa" stamped on it.

The Mahaska County Sheriff’s Office has taken several other theft reports of yard and garden ornaments including a large cast iron eagle that was stolen valued over $10,000. Dolly Parton Compares Playing Both Big And Small Cities

Dolly Parton has been touring the Canadian leg of her 2016 “Pure & Simple” Tour and she told one Canadian reporter last week what she compares playing big and small cities to, “Kinda like the dollar stores… You know they have ’em in all little places here and there. They have ’em in big cities but you’ll find a little. So I’m kinda like the dollar store.

 

JGR’s Matt Tifft To Undergo Surgery

Joe Gibbs Racing announced Tuesday that X-FINITY Series driver Matt Tifft will undergo surgery for removal of a low-grade glioma in the brain. The slow-growing tumor was found recently during treatment and evaluation for a disc condition in his back. Tifft will undergo surgery and rehabilitation soon. Once cleared by physicians, he is expected to return to racing. David Ragan will drive the Number-18 Toyota in Friday night’s Subway Firecracker 250 Powered by Coca-Cola at Daytona International Speedway. Tifft – who turned 20 on Sunda,  has made six X-FINITY Series starts this season with a best finish of eighth twice, in back-to-back races at Talladega Superspeedway and Dover International Speedway. He’s also made three starts in the Camping World Truck Series.
