Next Stop Pocono Raceway

Next Stop is Pocono Raceway  for Sunday’s Pennsylvania 400.  With just six events remaining in the regular season, defending race winner Matt Kenseth is one of five drivers who’ve clinched spots on The Chase Grid – joining Kyle Busch, Carl Edwards, Jimmie Johnson and Brad Keselowski in the sixteen-driver title field.  Those five account for fourteen wins through the first twenty races of the year … Kevin Harvick, Kurt Busch, Joey Logano, Martin Truex Junior, Denny Hamlin and Tony Stewart have one win apiece – leaving five post-season spots available based on the point standings.  Kyle Larson currently holds a ten-point lead over Kasey Kahne in the fight for what would be the final “playoff” spot.

46 Area Players Named To All-District Baseball Teams

The state baseball tournament is wrapping up over the weekend in Des Moines, and the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association has already honored the players for the 2016 All-District Teams.

In our listening area, we had dozens of players receive accolades for their work on the diamond this season.

In Class 1A in the Southeast District First Team, Moravia sophomore Mateo Varese was honored for his work as a pitcher. He was joined by Tanner Jansen of BGM on the pitching staff. In the infield, BGM’s Eric Weiss was selected as the second baseman and the Bears’ Kaiden Fiebelkorn was listed as the shortstop. Moravia third baseman Tucker Babbitt was also on the First Team, with the Mohawks’ centerfielder Avery Waybill also listed. Sigourney’s Peyton Crawford was also named to the outfield. Twin Cedars’ Trace Embray and North Mahaska’s Troy Roose were both named utility players on the First Team.

The second team has Cardinal’s Austin Bride listed as one of the catchers. He’s joined by Comet teammate Kaleb Aschenbrenner who is the Second Team Third Baseman. All four outfield slots were occupied by area athletes. Moravia’s Jake Martin, BGM’s Austin Keller, North Mahaska’s Clay Gleason, and English Valleys’ Andrew Kerkove were the outfielders. Cardinal’s Trevor Albert and Twin Cedars’ Marty Beary were two of the four utility players on the Southeast District Second Team in Class 1A.

In Class 2A, there were three different districts with area schools. The Central District had PCM’s Austin Brown listed as a pitcher on the Second Team.

In the Southeast District, Pekin’s Keaton Winn, an Iowa baseball commit, was named to the pitching staff. He’s joined by Centerville first baseman Daniel Hargrave and Treye Rinehart, who was listed as one of the five utility players. Albia’s quartet of shortstop Bryce Leshen, third baseman Gannon Osing, outfielder Cobi Thomas, and utility player Tyler Maddison rounded out the area players on the Southeast District First Team. Mid-Prairie’s Adam Schrock was listed as a utility player on the Southeast District Second Team.

Pleasantville got to the semifinals in Class 2A this season, and were listed in the Southwest District. The Trojans had first baseman Zeb Adreon and outfielder Brock Busick named to the First Team, while Colton Major was listed as a utility player on the Second Team.

In Class 3A, there were several top-notch baseball teams and that is reflected by the number of honorees in the Southeast District. On the First Team, Pella ace and Iowa commit Grant Judkins was on the pitchings staff. He was joined by teammate Tyler Hillman, who was named a utility player. Fairfield had four players on the First Team. Freshman catcher Kasta Papazaglou was joined by second baseman Alex Crile, shortstop Jordan Reid, and outfielder Cameron Baumann. Oskaloosa’s Ethan Arnold joined Papazaglou on the first team as a catcher.

On the Southeast District Second Team, Pella’s Lucas Hileman, Knoxville’s Ben Wallace, and Fairfield’s Tristen Ledger were all a part of the pitching staff. Pella’s Jaden Rolffs and Knoxville’s Calyn Bumgardner were named the two catchers on the Second Team. Fairfield’s Austin Simpson and Oskaloosa’s Bennett Spry were on the infield at first and second base respectively.

Finally, in Class 4A, Ottumwa had three players listed as a part of the South Central District. On the First Team, junior Austin Shotts was named to the pitching staff with senior Parker Thode named one of the utility players. Drake Craver was a utility player on the Second Team.

With Pella and Pleasantville making it to state and a handful of others substate qualifiers, it was a memorable baseball season in the Mahaska Zone Network listening area.

Free Wireless Internet Available On The Oskaloosa Town Square

Main Street Oskaloosa and Mahaska Communication Group (MCG) have teamed up to bring free Wireless Internet to downtown Oskaloosa. In early July, MCG installed Wireless Internet equipment downtown to allow both guests and MCG customers free access to the Internet while visiting downtown, according to Steve Burnett, MCG’s Sales and Marketing Manager.

“Karen Hafner from Main Street Oskaloosa asked us if we could partner with them to make wireless Internet available downtown, and we said ‘Absolutely, we can help make that happen.’,” stated Burnett.

Now, both guests and MCG customers have access to WiFi on the Oskaloosa square.  According to Burnett. MCG customers can log in to the “MCG” WiFi network using their account number and last name. The benefit of doing so gets you a faster Internet experience than the guest Internet connection. If you don’t recall your MCG information, you can log in to the “OSKALOOSA” WiFi network with just an email address – in the same way any guest to town or non-MCG customer would.

“We live in an increasingly connected world,” Burnett continued. “Having WiFi available helps in at least 2 ways. It give you a better Internet experience than your cellular data plan can provide, and it keeps your data usage off your cellular data plan – which charges you for using your plan too much.”

“With Fiber-to-the-home Internet, MCG customers are accustomed to having the best Internet in the State of Iowa, and while no WiFi is as good as the Gigabit Internet (1,000Mb) we offer customers, it is still better than spotty Internet often delivered by cellular devices.”

Main Street Oskaloosa and MCG invite you to check out the free WiFi next time you are downtown – shopping, dining, working or playing Pokémon Go.

Chris Young Partners With CASE To Help Veterans

Chris Young is teaming up CASE Construction Equipment for the fall run of his headlining “I’m Comin’ Over Tour.” The partnership will kick off on September 5 with Young headlining the “Labor Of Love” benefit concert in Racine, Wisconsin. Proceeds from the concert will benefit Team Rubicon, a disaster response organization made up of more than 36,000 veterans and first responders, with the goal of helping the organization expand its veteran’s skills training programs.

  • Chris explains why he’s so excited about his new partnership with CASE. He shares, “The work they do with connecting military veterans to job and training opportunities in the skilled trades is close to my heart, and I’m glad to have the opportunity to support those efforts.”

Highway 92 Construction Continues

OSKALOOSA — Drivers who have traveled Highway 92 in the last month or so have almost certainly encountered the substantial road renovations that have been underway.

It is a quite a bit more extensive than the typical filling of potholes or redoing of a shoulder. For an overview, they are repaving the entire stretch of road from Zephyr Avenue out toward Sigourney, to the old Hwy 92.

The concrete east of Oskaloosa, near Lake Keomah, has been prepared, and that stretch of road is passable for now, but the asphalt resurfacing, or blacktop, has actually not begun yet. It is due to begin as soon as the stretch west of town, on the Beacon side, is finished.

On Wednesday, Jim Webb with the Iowa DOT said, “Resurfacing west of town should probably be done within the week.” He says driving conditions should improve after that. He went on to say “I was just on that project earlier today so I know it’s getting close to done. After that we’ll still be re-shouldering, bringing rock in to get even with the pavement. After that we might be milling in some rumble strips, but I would say within a couple weeks we’ll be moving on to east of town to start resurfacing there.”

In other words: the horrendous traffic halt under 163 should be over within a couple weeks.

In the meantime, an official detour is not set up west of town, but going through Beacon and turning right after the Beacon Cemetery could get you past most of the traffic, if you don’t mind taking gravel.

Construction east of town is set to go on a while longer. It is not known exactly when the road will be fully finished, but the DOT gives an estimated
completion date of Sept. 15 for IA 92. It might not last that long, or they may at least stop needing the pilot cars by then, but mid-September is when they say the entire project should be finished.

DOT says there will be an official detour for East 92, so there should be the usual detour signs. If you need more information, you can visit iowadot.gov or call 511 to use its automated service.

Harvick’s Crew Chief Suspended

Rodney Childers, Kevin Harvick’s Sprint Cup Series crew chief at Stewart-Haas Racing, has drawn a one-race suspension after NASCAR discovered improperly secured lug nuts on their Number-4 Chevrolet following last weekend’s race at Indianapolis.  Childers has also been fined twenty thousand dollars and placed on probation through December 31st.  Harvick started seventh and finished sixth in the Crown Royal 400 … In addition, five teams received written warnings from the sanctioning body for a variety of inspection-related violations at Indy including Paul Menard’s Number-27 Richard Childress Racing team, which finished tenth at “The Brickyard.”

July 28th: On This Day

On this day in 1971, Charley Pride recorded his #1 single “Kiss An Angel Good Mornin”. The song was released as the first single from his twelfth studio album,  Charley Pride Sings Heart Songs.

The song was later Certified Gold, and would later be covered by the likes of George Jones, Alan Jackson, and Conway Twitty respectively.
