Pair Of Goals From Markovic, Houston Power WPU To Win

Oskaloosa–The Statesmen men’s soccer team did not pepper the opposing goal with many shots, but the ones that were taken were right on target as William Penn defeated Hannibal-LaGrange (Mo.) 4-1 in non-conference action Tuesday.

While WPU (1-1) was outshot 23-5, that stat is deceiving as play was quite even throughout.  The navy and gold obviously took advantage of those limited opportunities, including a goal just 2:07 into the afternoon.

Anfernee Houston (Fr., Harrisburg, Ill., Kinesiology), who was making his collegiate debut, drove home a pass from Bill Baye (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn., Physical Education) for the day’s first score.

The Trojans (0-1-1) evened things up in the 32nd minute, but just over four minutes later Houston hooked up with Nenad Markovic (So., Belgrade, Serbia) to give the hosts the lead for good.

Houston tacked on another goal (assist to Markovic) in the 49th minute, and Markovic capped the scoring at the 85:04 mark.  Jeremy Esparza (Sr., Evergreen Park, Ill., Pre-Law) collected the assist on the fourth goal.

Emannuel Esparza (So., Posen, Ill., Physical Education (K-12)) faced 17 shots in the second half, but most were off-line or blocked by a Statesmen defenseman.  The sophomore recorded seven saves in the victory.

“Our guys earned a well-deserved victory today,” Head Coach Jaymee Highcock said.  “We looked very fast and powerful on the counter attack and it was good to see what we have been learning in practice has come out in a game.  Defensively, we were intense and solid.  This team is very capable of scoring goals, so I am looking forward to when everything comes together.”

“Manny played a terrific game in goal and it was good for the subs to make a good impact as well,” Highcock added.  “A big thank you to all the sports programs and coaches for coming to support us.  We look forward to getting on the road and hopefully bringing back some good results.”

Next Up: William Penn travels to South Bend, Ind. this weekend to compete in the Goshen Tournament.  On Friday, the Statesmen face Goshen (Ind.) at 5 p.m., while on Saturday, WPU takes on Holy Cross (Ind.) at 3 p.m.

Iowa Fugitive Who Fled To Cuba Gets 12 Years In Prison

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — An Iowa man who tried to escape prosecution on federal firearms charges by fleeing to Cuba has been sentenced to 12 years in prison.
Court records say Shawn Michael Wegmann was sentenced Monday.
He’d pleaded guilty to possession of firearms by a convicted felon, possession of stolen firearms and to a charge of failure to appear in court.
The 38-year-old Wegmann admits he helped others steal 38 guns during burglaries in Iowa and Illinois last year. He was charged and released in July 2015, promising to appear in court.
In October he fled to Florida, stole a boat and motored to Cuba but authorities there promptly arrested him.
In December he became the first fugitive to be returned to the U.S. Cuban government after diplomatic relations resumed last year.

Race For The Chase Now Head To Darlington Raceway

With just two weeks left in the regular season, there are three spots still open on The Chase Grid for non-race winners to fill heading into Sunday night’s Bojangles’ Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway.  With Kyle Larson’s win two days ago at Michigan International Speedway, thirteen drivers have been victorious thus far in 2016 including Matt Kenseth, Kyle and Kurt Busch, Carl Edwards, Jimmie Johnson, Brad Keselowski, Joey Logano, Kevin Harvick, Martin Truex Junior, Denny Hamlin, Tony Stewart and Chris Buescher.  All are within the requisite top thirty of the standings, which currently leaves a maximum of three post-season spots available based on the point standings.  Jamie McMurray, Larson’s teammate at Chip Ganassi Racing, holds a fifteen-point lead over Richard Childress Racing’s Ryan Newman in the fight for what would be the final “playoff” spot … If the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup began today, Austin Dillon and rookie Chase Elliott would hold the two other berths.  Any driver who hasn’t yet won but reaches Victory Lane in either of the next two races would qualify for the post-season, provided that driver was among the top thirty in points, and would reduce the number of spots available based on the regular-season standings … With the post-season now right around the corner, the race for the Number-1 seed on The Chase Grid seems to be coming down to a two-man battle between Kyle Busch and Brad Keselowski.  Each has four wins.  Busch has one Cup Series victory at Darlington, in 2008.  Keselowski is winless at the track “Too Tough to Tame.”  He finished second to Carl Edwards there last summer.

Pipeline Company Seeks Restraining Order Against Protesters

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The company building an oil pipeline across Iowa is asking a federal judge to issue a restraining order against two protest groups and their leaders.
Dakota Access filed the action in Des Moines on Monday against Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement, Bold Iowa and their directors including former state lawmaker Ed Fallon, who leads Bold Iowa.
The groups are planning acts of civil disobedience along the pipeline route to protest its construction.
The company seeks a court order keeping protesters at least 25 feet away from construction easements which it says will “permit the meaningful opportunity to exercise protected First Amendment speech while ensuring the safety of all involved.”
Dakota Access says protesters have burned its equipment causing $3 million in property damage and delaying construction in two counties.

Kyle Larson Helps Chevrolet Finish With A One-Two Sweep

Kyle Larson got the best of rookie Chase Elliott on the day’s final restart Sunday at Michigan International Speedway, leading the last ten laps to record his first career Sprint Cup victory.  Larson was ready to pounce when the green flag flew for the final time while Elliott briefly spun his tires, opening the door for Larson to drive his Number-42 Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet straight into Gatorade Victory Lane.  The winning margin over Elliott was one-point-four seconds.  Brad Keselowski, the only Michigan driver in the forty-car field, finished third.  But his Number-2 Team Penske Ford failed post-race inspection, with any penalties likely to be announced at mid-week.  Rookie Ryan Blaney grabbed fourth place with Kevin Harvick completing the top five.  Pole sitter Joey Logano led twenty-four laps and finished tenth in his bid for a season sweep on the two-mile Irish Hills oval after winning in June … Larson led a race-high forty-one laps in helping to give Chevrolet a one-two sweep.  Elliott drove his Number-88 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet to second-place finishes in both Sprint Cup Series events at M-I-S in 2016.  Larson’s first Cup Series win comes in his ninety-ninth start and gives team owner Chip Ganassi just his second Michigan victory.  The first one came fifteen years ago with Sterling Marlin behind the wheel … Larson’s victory capped an historic weekend for NASCAR during which first-time winners celebrated in each of the sanctioning body’s three national series: Brett Moffitt in the Camping World Truck Series, Michael McDowell (X-FINITY) and then Larson on Sunday in Michigan.
