On The Track, Next Stop is Dover International Speedway

On The Track, Next Stop is Dover International Speedway for the third race of the post-season Chase, Sunday’s Citizen Soldier 400.  The Sixteen Challengers are traveling along a path that will ultimately lead to a championship for one with 2,877.58 “Miles-2-Miami” left before Ford Championship Weekend in November.  Four of the sixteen competitors on The Chase Grid will be dropped from title contention before the series heads to Charlotte next week.  Drivers currently occupying positions thirteen through sixteen are Jamie McMurray, Austin Dillon, three-time champion Tony Stewart and rookie Chris Buescher.  Kyle Larson holds the final provisional spot to transfer into the Round of Twelve, five points clear of the cutoff.

September 30th: On This Day

On this day in 2003, Martina McBride released her seventh album, Martina. The album hit number one on the country album charts, and number seven on the US album charts. It produced four singles with “This One’s for the Girls”, “In My Daughter’s Eyes”, “How Far”, and “God’s Will”.

The album has since been Certified Double Platinum by the RIAA.

Dolly Parton Makes Chart History

Dolly Parton has made even more history thanks to her collaborative rendition of “Jolene” with a cappella group Pentatonix. The new version of Parton’s classic has debuted at #18 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart, making Dolly the only artist to notch a Top 20 hit on the chart in each of the last six decades.

 

·       The song also sits at #4 on the Country Streaming Songs chart with 2.6 million U.S. streams and additionally finds #7 spot on the Country Digital Song Sales chart with 18,000 downloads sold in its first week out, according to Nielsen Music.

·       A video of the a cappella version of “Jolene” has gone viral with more than 10 million views so far. That video can be seen here.

Strait Out Of The Box: Part 2 – George Strait

George Strait has announced the release of his Strait Out of the Box: Part 2 compilation, available exclusively at Wal-Mart on November 18. The three-disc, 56-track collection features 36 hit singles — including 26 chart-toppers — as well as two brand new songs, his latest radio single “Goin’ Goin’ Gone” and 18 album cuts, all personally chosen by  King George.

 

·       Spanning 20 years of Strait’s career from 1996 to 2016, Strait Out of the Box: Part 2 follows the success of his 1995 compilation, Strait Out of the Box, which has sold more than 8 million copies to date.

On this day in 1993, Willie Nelson was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Nelson was inducted for being not just one of the most recognizable acts in country music, but an American icon.

In his career, to date, Nelson has released  sixty-eight studio albums, ten live albums,and thirty-seven compilations. Nelson has sold more than 40 million albums in the United States alone.

All For The Hall Benefit Held In Los Angeles

The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum hosted its ninth All for the Hall benefit concert on Tuesday night (9/27) in Los Angeles. The event featured an all-star lineup that included Vince Gill, Kacey Musgraves, Chris Stapleton, James Taylor and Joe Walsh, with a group of sixth graders from L.A.’s Dorris Place Elementary School also on hand to give a special performance. After Tuesday night’s benefit, the 2016 All for the Hall events in Nashville and Los Angeles have now netted more than $900,000 for the Museum’s educational programs.

 

“Home Team Tour” – Thomas Rhett

Thomas Rhett has announced the launch of his first-ever headlining tour next year. Rhett’s “2017 Home Team Tour” will kick off Saginaw, Michigan, on February 23 and will wrap up with a show at Nashville’s outdoor Ascend Amphitheater later that year. The tour will also feature special guest Kelsea Ballerini as the opening act, with newcomers Russell Dickerson and Ryan Hurd also making appearances throughout the tour.

 

·       Thomas says of the headlining tour, “This is really the first time we’ve been able to totally build our own stage and really plan for our show with all our fans. There has been this undeniable energy out on the road this year, and I know having Kelsea out there is going to amp things up even more.”

·       Rhett also says having his own tour allows him to give Dickerson and Hurd a platform to reach new fans, much like how Blake Shelton, Toby Keith and Jason Aldean did for him. Thomas shares, “I’m a huge fan of both Ryan and Russell and I can’t wait for my fans to get to know them too.”

·       Tickets for select tour dates go on sale to the public on October 7.

Grinnell College To show HD broadcast Of 10 Met Operas During The 2016-17 Year

GRINNELL, Iowa – This academic year, Grinnell College will stream ten Metropolitan operas as part of the “Metropolitan Opera Live in HD” movie theater transmissions program. The first in the series, Wagner’s “Tristan und Isolde,” will be streamed at 11 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 8, at the Harris Center Cinema, 1114 10th Ave., Grinnell. Kelly Maynard, associate professor of history, will deliver the opera talk at 10:30 a.m.

 

“Tristan und Isolde” is a tragic story that follows an Irish princess, Isolde, who has been captured and taken to Cornwall aboard Tristan’s ship. Tristan’s uncle, King Marke, plans to marry Isolde, but she resolves to poison herself before he can. When the poison gets switched with a love potion, Isolde and Tristan begin their heartbreaking love affair.

 

Sir Simon Rattle conducts, and the show stars seasoned Wagnerians Nina Stemme and Stuart Skelton as Isolde and Tristan, respectively.

 

“Tristan und Isolde” is the first in a series of 10 operas to be broadcast at the Harris Center. All performances begin at noon, unless otherwise noted. Opera talks take place a half-hour before the broadcast. The remaining operas this season are:

  • Oct. 22: Mozart’s “Don Giovanni” with an opera talk by Randye Jones, supervisor of the Burling Media Room.
  • Dec. 10: Saariaho’s ” l’Amour de loin” with an opera talk by Gene Gaub, associate professor of music.
  • Jan. 7, 2017: Verdi’s “Nabucco” with an opera talk by Don Smith, professor emeritus of history.
  • Jan. 21: Gounod’s “Roméo et Juliette” with an opera talk by Kelly Maynard, associate professor of history.
  • Feb. 25: Dvorak’s “Rusalka” with an opera talk by Jennifer Brown, associate professor of music.
  • March 11: Verdi’s “La Traviata” with an opera talk by Jennifer Brown, associate professor of music.
  • March 25: Mozart’s “Idomeneo.” There will be no opera talk before this performance.
  • April 22: Tchaikovsky’s “Eugene Onegin” with an opera talk by Kelly Herold, associate professor of Russian.
  • May 13, 11:30 a.m.: Strauss’ “Der Rosenkavalier.” There will be no opera talk before this performance.

 

Refreshments will be available for sale in the lobby of the cinema before each opera and during intermission.

Tickets are available at the Pioneer Bookshop and at the door on the day of the show. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students, children and Met Opera members.

The Office of the President has generously funded tickets for Grinnell College faculty, staff and students, and tickets are available for free at all locations. Family members not employed by the college are required to purchase tickets.

Post-Season Twin Bill Looms At Dover

There’ll be high drama in this weekend’s Sprint Cup/X-FINITY Series doubleheader at Dover International Speedway with four Cup Series drivers facing elimination in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup.  With wins at Chicagoland Speedway and New Hampshire, respectively, Martin Truex Junior and Kevin Harvick are moving on.  But at the bottom of the post-season standings, four drivers are looking to get their title hopes back on track in Delaware’s capital city: Jamie McMurray, Austin Dillon, Tony Stewart and Chris Buescher.  None of those four have cracked the top ten in either of the first two post-season races … In the X-FINITY Series, Elliott Sadler’s victory at Kentucky Speedway moved him into the next round.  But after finishing only twenty-eighth in the opening race of the inaugural Chase, top-seeded Erik Jones finds himself ninth in the twelve-man title field with just two weeks left before four drivers are eliminated from championship contention.
