Darius Rucker Announces Signature Brand of Whiskey

Darius Rucker has partnered with 843 to develop his own signature brand of whiskey, dubbed Backstage Southern Whiskey. The whiskey gets its name from a pre-show ritual Darius has on the road, in which he gathers his tour mates, band members, and any special guests backstage to raise a glass of whiskey as “good luck” to ensure a great show. Rucker says, “That toast is a vital part of our nightly routine. It’s really about celebrating the opportunity to make music together. And Backstage Southern Whiskey is now a part of that important ritual that we can share with fans.”

·       Backstage Southern Whiskey will first be introduced in Rucker’s home state of South Carolina, with distribution in Georgia, Kentucky, and Tennessee to follow.

Iowa Lawmakers Consider Making Most 911 Calls Confidential

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A fast-moving Iowa bill would eliminate the public’s right to access 911 calls involving emergencies in which people are injured, sealing key information about public safety.

The House has approved the measure and a Senate committee will discuss it Thursday.

The bill declares that 911 calls involving injured victims are medical records and exempt from Iowa’s open records law. That means authorities’ initial response to shootings, stabbings and many other incidents would face less scrutiny.

Calls involving juveniles would all be confidential.

GOP Rep. Dean Fisher says the legislation comes in response to the release of 911 calls to The Associated Press last year that exposed a string of gun accidents in Tama County that killed two teens and injured a third.

Fisher says medical privacy outweighs the public’s right-to-know.

Des Moines Zoo Tiger Dies of Lymphoma

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A tiger at the Blank Park Zoo in Des Moines has died of cancer.

The Des Moines Register reports (http://dmreg.co/2nkcQK2 ) that the 6-year-old Siberian tiger named Max died March 21. He came to the zoo in June from the Brookfield Zoo in Chicago to breed with another Blank Park Zoo tiger.

Zoo spokesman Ryan Bickel says Max showed signs of illness in late February. A necropsy performed at Iowa State University identified lymphoma, a type of cancer, as the cause of Max’s illness and death. The zoo received the test results on Tuesday.

Iowa GOP Lawmakers Drop ‘Fetal Heartbeat’ Abortion Bill

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa Republican lawmakers have dropped plans for what would have been among the nation’s toughest abortion restrictions, retreating only a day after the proposal was announced.

House GOP lawmakers announced Wednesday they removed language from a bill that called for a ban on abortions once a fetal heartbeat is detected. Other proposals also were removed, including a 72-hour-waiting period and possible criminal penalties for doctors who perform abortions.

Legislators said there wasn’t enough Republican support to pass the more far-reaching bill.

Democrats and abortion rights opponents had criticized the proposals, calling them an assault on women.

The bill in its latest form will again focus on banning most abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy, which is based on the disputed notion that a fetus can feel pain at that point.
