First feature of the night was the Parker Tree Service Hobby Stock 15 lap feature. Christian Huffman started on the pole and took advantage by grabbing the top spot early but Points Leader Dustin Griffiths worked his way from sixth starting spot to the lead on lap five. Griffiths lead was short as Eric Stanton, had worked his way by Huffman and began to battle for the lead. Stanton took the lead away on lap seven. Stanton cruised to the win, even though a pair of cautions, first for Jesse Williams slowing in turn one and then for Rick Van Dusseldorp in turn two, tried to deny Stanton the win. Derek Kirkland grabbed the second place finish ahead of Clint Nelson. Huffman and Craig Brown finished fourth and fifth.

Jason McDaniel took advantage of Jeff Frana opting to go to the tail in the Carter Manufacturing / Van’s Racing Sport Mods 15 lap feature. McDaniel grabbed lead early and followed by Taylor Elliott from Webster City. McDaniel and Elliott ran first and second until a caution on lap seven for Coleton Pace in turn two bunched the field up. Nobody had anything for McDaniel, driver nicknamed “Mighty Mouse”, as McDaniel cruised on to take the win ahead of “Speedy Bray” Brayton Carter, Curtis VanDerWal, Logan Anderson and Elliott.

Cody Phillips led the first lap of the Finish Line Auto Sales Sport Compacts 10 lap main event but the caution came out for debris in trun two. On the restart, Phillips had to contend with Ryan Havel. Havel led lap two but Brandon Housley worked his way from fifth to grab the race lead on lap three. Housley pulled away and went on to take his fourth consecutive win in as many weeks in Osky. Phillips settled for second, Kyle Boyd was third, Barry Taft was fourth and Austin Kaplan was fifth.

Final feature of the night was the Midstate Machine Stock Cars 18 lap feature event. Derrick Agee wrestled the lead away early and pulled away meanwhile behind him the battle was heating up between several drivers for second on back. Agee looked to heading to an easy win when the caution came out on lap 12 for Mike Harward blowing up in turn one. Agee had Scott Dickey, Mike Hughes, Cayden Carter and Danny Trasher behind him on the restart was able to hold them until he slid up left the door open and Dickey took advantage. Dickey led the remaining laps to come across the line in first but disqualified in post-race tech inspection, that handed the win over to the Orange Crush Machine driven by the “Gasman” Cayden Carter. Agee, Hughes and Nathan Wood rounded out the top five.

Fire Truck rides from Eddyville Fire Department and the Nickel & Candy Toss will move to another because their was 37 bikes given away, so keep your eyes on the Southern Iowa Speedway Facebook for what night that will be on.

Oskaloosa falls to Albia 4-3 in Season Opener

The Indians opened up their 2018 campaign with an exciting but heartbreaking 4-3 loss to the talented Albia Lady Dees in Oskaloosa on Monday night.

Oskaloosa had the based loaded, and were down by one, with two outs in the bottom of the 7th. Josie Bunnell stepped in and hit a line drive the landed right in the glove of Albia shortstop Kennedy Schroeder, ending the game.

Oskaloosa was playing on their brand-new softball complex in their first game since finishing 3rd at the State Tournament a year ago.  Both Haley Hacker and Jena Lawrence pitched well for Oskaloosa and Albia respectively.

Hacker threw a complete game, allowing just four runs on five hits. Lawrence took home the win though, allowing three runs on 10 hits in all seven innings of work.

Oskaloosa head coach Jay Harms said in the post-game interview he was relatively pleased with Hacker’s performance.           He also recognized the Indians have much improving to do.

One of facets of the game Harms said the Indians need to improve was bunting. The team was unable to lay down a single bunt, despite many attempts.

“We’re going to have to manufacture runs,” said Harms. “The days of one to zero and two to zero games are over.”

This in reference to the end of the Alexis Groet era, in which Groet was a 5-time All-State selection for the Indians in the circle.

Replacing departed talent remains one of the biggest challenges Oskaloosa will face this year. But, Jay Harm’s squad boasts an abundance of young talent, the question is which Indians will see the field.

The Indians move to 0-1 on the season, while the Lady Dees start 1-0. The next game for the Oskaloosa softball team will be at home on May 22nd, with the Varsity game starting around 7:30 p.m.

The next Oskaloosa game featured on the No Coast Network will be on Friday, May 25th, when the Oskaloosa baseball team takes on the Huskies from Winterset.

Wild Night of Racing Settles Down with Four New Faces in Victory Lane at Southern Iowa Speedway

by Jeremy Fox

Oskaloosa, Iowa (May 9th, 2018) – Last week mother nature washed the racing action away but this week was a different story as beautiful skies with very few clouds in the sky meant the Musco Lighting Southern Iowa Speedway presented by KBOE 104.9 could finally get another night in the books.

Binn & Stevens Dust Control, Supreme Lawn & Landscape and Kraig Ford sponsored the night. It was also College and High School Night meaning all College or High School students could get in free with their student IDs. Thanks to the Southern Iowa Fairboard, there was even a $2 Beer Special all night for the fans of legal age.

Seventy cars checked in to race on night two at the Southern Iowa Speedway and that included 9 Iowa Sportsman Series, 11 Sport Compacts, 13 Stock Cars, 14 Sport Mods and 23 Hobby Stocks. Four New Faces took wins on Wednesday : Brandon Housley (Sport Compacts), Nathan Wood (Stock Cars), Eric Stanton (Hobby Stocks) and Doug Weiss (Iowa Sportsman Series) meanwhile Curtis VanDerWal repeats in the Sport Mods.

Brandon Housley #42 Sport Compact Winner

First feature to take to the speedway was the Finish Line Auto Sales Sport Compacts 10 lap feature. Billy Cain and Brandon Allison battled it out to take the lead on lap one with Cain taking it however a little contact between the two allowed Brandon Housley, who worked his way from seventh starting spot. Next up was the “Class Too Tough To Tame” the Midstate Machine Stock Cars 16 lap feature event. Dustin Griffiths took advantage of his pole position by grabbing the early lead but Mike Brown was not making easy on him out front. Nathan Wood was running second until Mike Hughes was able to grab the third spot away on lap three. Hughes continued to chip away and managed to edge out Griffiths at the line on lap five. On lap nine contact between Griffiths and Hughes sent Hughes to the pits with a flat tire meanwhile that allowed Nathan Wood to sneak by Griffiths for the lead as well. Wood knew there would be a challenge late and that challenge late came from Opening Night Feature Winner Cayden Carter. Wood was able to fend off “The Gasman” Carter for the win. Griffiths managed a third place finish, Michael Peterson finish fourth and Derrick Agee was fifth.

When the race finally got started, it was “Mighty Mouse” Jason McDaniel taking the race lead. McDaniel looked comfortable out front and appeared heading to the victory until the caution came out on lap nine for Jarret VanDenBerg flipping in turn three, VanDenBerg climbed from the car but it, too, ended his night. McDaniel now had to contend with “Speedy Bray” Brayton Carter and Curtis VanDerWal for the race lead. VanDerWal got by Carter and then McDaniel to take the race on lap ten. VanDerWal pulled away and went on to take his second win of the season. McDaniel finished 2nd, Carter was 3rd, Blaine Webster was 4th and Logan Anderson was 5th.

New Superintendent Announced for Oskaloosa Community School District

Paula Wright Will Be Oskaloosa Community School District’s Next Superintendent

The Oskaloosa Community School District Board of Education voted to offer a 3-year contract to Paula Wright who has served the last 11 years as Superintendent of Schools at Chariton. She also serves as the District’s Curriculum Director and Special Ed Director.  Wright has accepted that offer and will be the new Superintendent effective July 1.

“We’re pleased to have Paula on board.  Her experience and hardworking, high-energy style, coupled her desire to do what’s best for kids, will serve the Oskaloosa district well,” commented Board President Shelly Herr.  “She’s anxious to partner with faculty, staff, parents, and the community to provide opportunities for all students,” said Herr.

Wright studied Educational Leadership at Iowa State University, completing her Certificate of Advanced Studies in 2005.  She has also earned a Master of Science Degree from Drake University in Educational Administration and a Bachelor of Science Degree from Simpson College in Elementary and Special Education. Wright has teaching experience in Special Education, 2nd, and 4th grades and served as an elementary principal for 9 years prior to assuming the Superintendent role.

Wright has also been involved in advocacy for public education through her leadership work on committees with the Iowa Department of Education and School Administrators of Iowa, working with state legislators.

She and her husband Gene have three grown children, all living in the Des Moines area.   They have both been very active in their community and in her free time she enjoys quilting, swimming, bicycling, and spending time with family and friends.

“I am excited to join the Oskaloosa Community School District family.  I was impressed with the support and dedication from the community, administration, faculty, and students.  I can tell the Oskaloosa community cares about their school district, community, and students.    This type of environment is a perfect match for my leadership style.  I am looking forward to meeting you and becoming an Oskaloosa Indian!  Together we can create an environment which engages all students to embrace the power of learning.”

“As part of this hiring process, stakeholder groups shared the strengths and needs of our District,” said Herr.  “Through those discussions, as well as conversations with the candidates, it’s become clear to me how fortunate we are to have a community that supports our school and a great staff that’s committed to the students of our District. I think Paula has the ability and passion to lead our district and build upon those strengths.   It is now up to all of us to do our part to support and help her and her team move our district forward.”

The Board will meet to ratify the contract later this week.
