Drug company expands voluntary recall of infant ibuprofen

Tris Pharma has expanded its voluntary recall of infant ibuprofen because it may contain overly high concentrations of the drug.  The company, based in Monmouth Junction, New Jersey, announced the move this week.

It says the concentration can be as high as 10 percent above the specified limit. The affected brands include CVS health and Equate and are sold at Walmart, CVS and Family Dollar stores.

Infants already susceptible to the adverse effects of ibuprofen could be at a slightly higher risk if given medication from a recalled bottle. There’s a remote possibility an elevated level of ibuprofen could lead to permanent kidney damage in babies.

Other potential adverse health effects include nausea, vomiting, stomach pain and diarrhea.

Tris Pharma says it hasn’t received any reports of related health problems.

University of Iowa student found dead outside on campus

The father of a University of Iowa student who died after being found outside and unresponsive on campus early Wednesday morning said his son was a good kid and has a lot of questions surrounding his son’s death.

Gerald Belz, 18, a second-year pre-medicine major, was found on campus behind Halsey Hall at about 2:48 a.m. by University of Iowa Police. He was transported to the hospital where he later died. Officials said they believed the cause of death is weather-related. Meteorologists said the wind chill at that time in Iowa City was -51 degrees.

Gerald’s father, Michael Belz, spoke to KCRG-TV9 Wednesday afternoon. Michael said doctors have told him that alcohol was not found in his son’s system at the time of his death.

Michael said Gerald was sending messages to his girlfriend using the social media platform Snapchat late Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. The messages indicated that Gerald was going to bed with no plans to go out.

Michael said his son was in his first year at the University of Iowa but was academically considered a second-year student. Gerald was a pre-medicine major and wanted to become a cardiologist.

Chances for snow Thursday with warmer weather in the forecast

Many locations in eastern Iowa have broken daily record lows Thursday morning, but chances for snow are on the way.  Additional snowfall starts up in the late morning hours Thursday.

There’s likely be one to two inches in accumulation. Many roads will become slick. The snow will likely linger into the evening commute.  Friday continues to look dry and quiet with highs back to the teens and potentially some lower 20s.

EXTENDED FORECAST:

The next system arrives this weekend with mainly rain, though the increase in dew points will allow for drizzle and fog to be widespread.  Until pavement temperatures can rebound, roads could be slick with drizzle or fog Saturday.  Snowmelt will be quick this weekend and may result in some minor rises on creeks and streams.
