AREA SENIORS WILL BE PLAYING TODAY IN THE IOWA AMERICAN LEGION STATE BASEBALL TOURNAMENT

Area seniors will be playing today in the Iowa American Legion State Baseball Tournament

For seniors like Jaylan Jones, Tyler Ward, Nik Batterson, Dillon Berg, Christian Howard, Jarhett VanEnglenhoven and Treyton Larkin, there’s still one more week left in this baseball season. Two weeks ago after seeing a winning season of OHS baseball come to a sudden close in the opening round of Class 4A substate play, seven seniors will be back on the diamond in red and white representing the City of Bridges in the 2018 Iowa American Legion State Baseball Tournament.

The American Legion Department of Iowa will conclude its baseball season with its double elimination state tournament for its senior high school players. Nine teams will play to see who is best, culminating to a single championship game hosted by the Cedar Rapids Kernels at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Thursday, Aug. 2, at 6 p.m.

Ottumwa’s O.B. Nelson Post No. 3 will be in the very first game of the tournament, facing Woodbury County American Legion at noon at Daniels Park on Monday. Ottumwa will play on Tuesday, either in 1 p.m. with a Monday loss or at 6 p.m. with a pair of wins. Ottumwa would face Johnston at Mount Mercy University on Monday evening with an opening-game win at 6 p.m.

The teams playing the tournament are along with O.B. Nelson Post No. 3 are Ames Post No. 37, the Carroll County Merchants, Dubuque County American Legion Baseball, Johnston Post No. 728, Kennedy Legion Baseball, Linn Marr Lions junior, Swisher Post No. 671 and Woodbury County American Legion Baseball. Five games will be played on Monday, five more will take place on Tuesday, four games will be held Wednesday all at Mount Mercy University with the final two games on Thursday being held at Perfect Game Field.

Thursday’s championship game will be recorded by Mediacom and aired Friday, Aug. 3. Further information for the event, including the rest of the game schedules and times, can be found through Perfect Game’s website (www.perfectgame.org).
