Two people are in custody after a four hour standoff in Kellogg Sunday (1/6).  The Jasper County Sheriff’s Office says just before noon, deputies responded to a report of an assault in the 12000 block of North 39^th Avenue East in Kellogg.  Deputies were told a man tried to ram their vehicle with another vehicle. An investigation determined the man was in an apartment in the 12000 block of North 39^th Avenue East.  Negotiators tried to get the man to come out, but he refused…claiming to be holding hostages.  Deputies concluded there were other people in the apartment, but they weren’t hostages.  Around 4pm, communications were cut off and the people in the apartment were told to come out.  They didn’t.  What the Sheriff’s Department calls less lethal force including chemical munitions were used to end the stand-off.  About five minutes later, all the subjects left the apartment.  No one was injured.  34-year-old Travis Howerton of Kellogg has been charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, while 45-year-old Talina Hayes of Newton is charged with interference with official acts.  Howerton is in the Jasper County Jail on $2000 bond; Hayes is free on bond.
