BURLINGTON, Iowa (AP) — The family of a woman fatally shot by a Burlington police officer has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the city.

The lawsuit was filed last week in U.S. District Court in Davenport. It says among its allegations that Officer Jesse Hill’s actions on Jan. 6, 2015, were reckless in causing the death of 34-year-old Autumn Steele. Hill had been sent to check a domestic dispute and fired his weapon at the family’s dog, which jumped on Hill and bit one of his thighs. Steele was struck instead.

A prosecutor later determined that the shooting was justified and didn’t charge Hill. Steele’s family and The Hawk Eye newspaper have since waged a legal fight for more records in the case.

City officials have declined to comment about the lawsuit.
