MAHASKA COUNTY SUPERVISORS TALK ROADS, MEMORIAL DAY

Mahaska County Supervisors Talk Roads, Memorial Day

The Mahaska County Board of Supervisors met for a very brief meeting Monday morning.

The main topic of the day turned out to be the secondary roads budget.

Dave Shanahan with Mahaska County Secondary Roads spoke with the Supervisors about a budget amendment that was needed before the new fiscal year that begins in July.

Chair Willie Van Weelden had several questions regarding why certain roads and items are being done before the items that are being brought up for the amendment.

According to Van Weelden, there are a few roads that have been recently serviced despite there being a lack of traffic on the road.

Shanahan explained that those are still listed as “Class A” roads, meaning that those roads have a higher priority than some of these other projects. He also said that if the Supervisors have questions on why certain roads are at Class A status, they can go through a process to have that lowered to a lower classification.

The vote passed on a 2-1 margin, with Van Weelden voting against, believing the remaining budget money could be enough if used wisely before July.

The Board also approved the use of the Mahaska County Courthouse flag poles for the Memorial Day Observance on the square. This event will be on the square for the first time. It was held at Forest Cemetery previously.

The Board also held a public hearing regarding a new ordinance, which is establishing a policy for construction and reconstruction of county roadways. This is something that Shanahan said all counties are doing and it is mainly to state that Mahaska County is following the Iowa Department of Transportation code.

The next scheduled meeting of the Mahaska County Board of Supervisors will be held on Monday, May 16, at the Mahaska County Courthouse. The meeting will be called to order at 9 AM.
