Oskaloosa Volleyball Off To A Strong Start In 2015

The Oskaloosa volleyball team got their season off to a good start Tuesday night in Newton in a tournament.

The Indians went 3-2 on the night, knocking off Carlisle, Knoxville, and Newton. The two losses came to Class 4A’s #12 team ADM and the #4 team in Class 5A Dowling Catholic.

“It was a good first night out and the team showed a lot of promise,” said Osky Head Coach Jennifer Comfort. “We had multiple compliments from other coaches, officials, and opponent parents on the way the team played, how well they played together, and other positive comments.”

Statistically, the girls were very balanced. Maria Settimi and Alexis Westercamp showed that they will be quite the duo in attacking, as both neared the 30 kill mark. Settimi had 28 kills with a solid .208 kill percentage, and Westercamp had 27 kills with an outstanding .357 kill percentage in the tournament. Zoe Lynch and Cara Roquet also reached double figures in kills.

Leah VanMaanen led the way in the setting department, posting 68 assists. Settimi was again the leader in serving, going 32 of 38 with a team high 11 aces. Brooke Caves was 30 of 34 with 5 aces. Lynch and VanMaanen also were efficient from the service line and had multiple aces.

Defensively, Caves led from her defensive position with 44 digs. VanMaanen had 24 digs, and Westercamp led the way with 3 solo blocks and 3 assists on blocks.

Oskaloosa will look to carry that positive momentum into tonight as the Indians take on Bondurant-Farrar in their home opener in Oskaloosa. The Freshmen and JV contests start around 5:30, and the varsity squad will take the floor around 7:30 this evening.
