Reported Burglary at Fremont Elementary, Individual Remains At Large

According to a Mahaska County Sheriff’s press release, a representative from the Fremont Elementary School contacted the Mahaska County Sheriff’s Office on report of a burglary.

The burglary occurred at the school the night prior to October 27, 2017. Approximately $9,000 worth of electronic devices had been taken from the school.

As a result of the investigation into this matter, on November 25, 2017, Sheriff’s Officials charged 28-year-old Joel Thorn Welch, Fremont, and 24-year-old Blake Tyler Cassatt, Fremont, with Burglary in the Third Degree and Theft in the Second Degree. Both individuals were also charged with Possession of Marijuana.

Arrest warrants were issued for both Welch and Cassatt.

Welch was arrested as his residence, pursuant to this warrant, on November 27th. Cassatt remains at large on his warrant.

Burglary in the Third Degree and Theft in the Second Degree are both class D felonies.

Young Adult Arrested for Robbery

Shortly after midnight on Friday the Wapello County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call from the BP Gas Station in Agency on reports of a robbery.
Deputies respond to the area and located a subject matching the reported description on foot just a few blocks from BP.
An investigation was conducted and deputies arrested Jacob Bonner Age 18 of Eldon.  Bonner was charged with Burglary in the second degree – a Class  C Felony, Robbery in the second degree – a Class C Felony, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and Person Under the Legal Age both Simple Misdemeanors.
Bonner is in the Wapello County Jail and bond is set at $12,300.

Blakesburg C-Store Robbed, Twice Within a Month

In the early morning hours of July 30th, and then again on August 31st, the Wapello County Sheriff’s Office investigated two separate burglary reports from the C-Store located in Blakesburg.

Throughout the course of the separate investigations, Law Enforcement personnel had reason to believe the same individual had committed both burglaries at the C-Store. During the burglaries the main items stole were a large quantity of cigarettes.

On September 1st, the Wapello County Sheriff’s Office conducted a search warrant at a residence in Blakesburg. During the search warrant Deputies seized numerous items believed to be of value in the criminal prosecutions of the burglaries. Also seized during the search warrant was a large quantity of cigarettes.

During the investigation the Wapello County Sheriff’s Office has sent several seized/collected items to the Iowa DCI Laboratory.

 

This criminal charge is an accusation and the Defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

Armed Family Member Enters Residence

An incident out of Jasper County involving three individuals occurred just south of Newton on Highway 74 headed to Reasnor on July 18. Henry Vanrees, 49, arrived at his father and sister’s residence, upset about a living situation.  Vanrees had entered the home and kicked in the door to Rose Vanrees room. At the time, Vanrees possessed a weapon which he used to intimidate both Rose Vanrees and Timothy Brown by firing a handgun into the wall. Vanrees then stated that both Vanrees and her boyfriend needed to leave or he would kill them.

Because of the early morning incident, Henry Vanrees faces the following charges:

  • Intimidation with a dangerous weapon with the intent to injure
  • Going armed with intent
  • Burglary in the First Degree
  • Harassment in the First Degree

Vanrees is currently being held in the Jasper County Jail. No court date is set.
