1938: Country singer and songwriter Lew DeWitt of The Statler Brothers fame is born on this day. DeWitt suffered from Crohn’s disease and died on August 15, 1990.

1975: The high profile divorce between George Jones and Tammy Wynette is finalised.

1991: Alan Jackson scores his first #1 on Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart, with “I’d Love You All Over Again.”

2006: After having successful test runs in outside cities, Ring of Fire, a jukebox musical version of the Johnny Cash biography, debuts on Broadway at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre. However, the show closed due to harsh reviews and disappointing sales on April 30, 2006.

This Day in Country Music History

1939: American country music artist Razzy Bailey is born in La Fayette, Alabama.

1950: “Chattanoogie Shine Boy” by Red Foley is the first country hit cross over record to hit #1 on the best selling country record chart as well as pop best seller chart.

1955: George Jones’ first chart single, “Why Baby Why”, hits the country charts, peaking at #4.

1978: Dolly Parton sits at #1 on the US Country music album chart with Here You Come Again, her nineteenth solo studio album.

1998: Hal Ketchum marries Gina Pacconi at the Grace Methodist Church in Austin, Texas.

2016: Joey Floyd dies at age 47, after a long battle with cancer. Floyd was a longtime band member in Toby Keith’s Easy Money Band. Floyd played guitar, banjo and fiddle for Keith and it is reported that he also introduced Keith to Willie Nelson.

April 26th: On This Day

On this day in 2013. George Jones passed away at Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville. Widely regarded as one of the genre’s all-time greatest singers, the Country Music Hall of Fame member left such traditional-country landmarks as “The Grand Tour,” “The Race Is On” and “He Stopped Loving Her Today”.

For the last 20 years of his life, Jones was frequently referred to as the greatest living country singer, which wasn’t hard to believe with his more than 150 hits.

The shape of his nose and facial features earned Jones the nickname “The Possum.”

October 25th: On This Day

On this day in 2000, Vince Gill and Dolly Parton hosted a TV taping for the Grand Ole Opry’s 75th: A Celebration, at the Opry House. The special debuted on CBS on Thursday, November 23rd, later that year. The show also included performances by current Opry Members including Garth Brooks, Reba McEntire, Alan Jackson, and George Jones.

July 28th: On This Day

On this day in 1971, Charley Pride recorded his #1 single “Kiss An Angel Good Mornin”. The song was released as the first single from his twelfth studio album,  Charley Pride Sings Heart Songs. 

The song was later Certified Gold, and would later be covered by the likes of George Jones, Alan Jackson, and Conway Twitty respectively.
