Farmers Market Nutrition Program Vendor Training

Iowa State University (ISU) Extension and Outreach in Iowa and Johnson County along with the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS) are cooperating to provide training for local food and farmer’s market producers. The training is for producers who would like become certified to participate in the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Farmers Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) and Senior FMN. This is the first time Extension offices in Iowa have offered the training to farmers so that they are certified to be able to accept FMNP checks.

“I am excited that Extension offices are supporting this program, as it is helpful to local farmers, farmers markets, young families and the seniors who benefit from the program,” said Gene Mohling, Region 15 Director for ISU Extension and Outreach. “We are proud that we can offer the use of county Extension office space to provide easy access to this training.”

For the 2018 season, there will only be webinar training options, replacing all previous video training methods. Individuals are able to attend any of the webinars from their home, library, or family computer. Throughout the state, ISU Extension and Outreach is partnering with IDALS to deliver these webinars through April to those who wish to view the webinars at Extension locations and those with limited access to a computer or internet connection. Webinars through April will be available for viewing at county Extension offices. Individuals must sign in at the office to account for their attendance.

Iowa and Johnson County Extension are two of the twenty ISU Extension and Outreach locations across the state that is showing the webinars.

In 2017, WIC recipients in the state of Iowa redeemed $383,000 dollars in certificates and seniors redeemed $477,000 in certificates. The funds are spent only at farmers markets and with local farmers for locally grown fruits and vegetables.

Fruit Tree Pruning & Training Workshop March 21

Fruit producers will have another opportunity to learn how to prune and train fruit trees to maximize fruit production. These techniques will be demonstrated on apple and pear trees growing at the ISU Southeast Research Farm near Crawfordsville on Wednesday, March 21.

Patrick O’Malley, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach commercial horticulturist, will discuss why and how the different types of fruit trees are pruned and trained to maximize annual fruit production. O’Malley presented a similar program in February at the Washington County Extension office to a full house. The workshop on March 21 will be a demonstration.

The workshop will be held at 1:00 pm at the ISU Southeast Iowa Research Farm located at 3115 Louisa-Washington Rd, Crawfordsville. The cost of the workshop is $5.00. If you have questions, contact Johnson County Extension and Outreach at 319-337-2145 or omall@iastate.edu.

EBF Jazz Band Qualifies for Championships

(IOWA CITY, Iowa) – The Eddyville Blakesburg Fremont (EBF) High School Jazz band was hard at work on Saturday competing in class 2A at the South East Iowa Bandmasters Association District Jazz Contest. The fruits of their labor paid off when they came home with a second-place finish just behind Mid-Prairie High School, qualifying them for the Iowa Jazz Championships at Iowa State University on April 5.

Only the first and second place finishers from the South East Iowa Bandmasters Districts were eligible to go on to the Iowa Jazz Championships. Outstandingly, this is the 32nd year in a row that the band has qualified for championships.

Under the direction of Joe Overton, the band was able to take home awards overall as well as for individual performances. Several students received an Outstanding Soloist Award for their solo performances: Kendal Durst for bass; Grace Manternach for flute; Eric Schutt for trombone; Harrison Mock for trumpet; Julia Fairchild for vibes; Cyrus Rogers for tenor sax; Elijah Hartman for drums; Maggie Voyles for piano; Tara Diephius for tenor sax; Cameron Kolthoff for trumpet; Delanee Van Zante for alto sax; and Emma Mock for clarinet. The EBF Sax Section also received an Outstanding Section Award for their superior performance.

What’s next? The EBF High School Jazz Band is off to perform in concert with the Junior High Jazz Band on Thursday, March 22 at the EBF High School at 7:00 PM. After that, it’s on to the Iowa Jazz Championships in Ames on April 5 at ISU. The band will take the stage at 9:00 AM for the 2A contest.

“Friends and supporters of the band are encouraged to attend and lend your support,” said Joe Overton, Band Director, via a media release sent on Monday, March 5.
