Northwest of Newton lies a small city of Mingo in Jasper County. A Des Moines man arrived at a residence in Mingo and was walking the property looking for the homeowners’ wife. Carlos Alvarez arrived at the victim’s house with a short-barreled shotgun.

Jasper County Sheriff’s Deputies arrived on scene and arrested Alvarez on possession of offensive weapon charge. After an initial search of his persons, deputies discovered two grams of a white crystal substance in his pockets — determined to be methamphetamine after a field test kit was orchestrated.

Once Alvarez was restrained, deputies searched his vehicle to find marijuana, digital scales, small plastic baggies and two glass smoking pipes.

Alvarez was arrested and charged with the following:

• Controlled substance violation – Methamphetamine
• Unauthorized possession of offensive weapons
• Possession of drug paraphernalia
• Possession of controlled substance – Marijuana
