MCCB’s Bird Food Giveaway

The Mahaska County Conservation Board will be having their annual Bird Food Giveaway on Saturday, Jan. 27 from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM (Noon) on the east side of the conservation center at Russell Wildlife Area. The public may pick up free cracked corn for bird feeding during this time. Please bring your own (10 gal.) buckets to fill up. Staff will be on hand to assist you in filling and carrying the buckets.

The Russell Wildlife Area is located at 2254 – 200th Street in New Sharon, Iowa, which is four miles north of Oskaloosa on Hwy 63 and one mile east on 200th Street. For more information, call MCCB at 641-673-9327.

Nature Crafts & Cocoa

The Mahaska County Conservation Board is inviting you to a program that is sure to bring out the crafty and creative side of you! Laura DeCook, the MCCB naturalist, will demonstrate how to create some very simple crafts using things found at home and right outside in nature. So bring your family and friends out to the conservation center for some fun and fellowship. Whatever you make, you will take home! Refreshments will be served. This FREE activity is for all ages.

Please call MCCB at 641-673-9327 to reserve a spot and craft supplies. Registration deadline will be Jan. 10.

Reptile Round-up

Bring your kids and friends out to the conservation center to see some common reptiles of Iowa.  Some snakes, turtles and a gecko will be featured in some fun and interactive activities.  Don’t miss this program!  This program is for all ages and no pre-registration is required. 

What’s the Great American Solar Eclipse?

The media is all abuzz about the upcoming Total Solar Eclipse on August 21st.  What is all the hype?  It will be a special solar event for the United States and no other country in the world! Come on out to the conservation center and learn all about it.  This program is for all ages and no pre-registration is needed. 

Evening Fossil Dig

Bring your family out to the Russell Wildlife Area and take a hike with the naturalist to search for fossils of plants and animals that scientists believe lived in a shallow sea across Iowa nearly 300 million years ago.  You will find fossils such as crinoids, brachiopads and even bryozoans.  Be sure to bring a flashlight, wear sturdy shoes and clothes that can get dirty!
