Baseball All-State Teams Announced By Coaches Association

It’s never easy to become an All-State athlete, but a few area baseball players received that honor, as the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association released their 2017 All-State Teams earlier this week.

In Class 1A, Twin Cedars senior Trace Embray was named to a utility position on the First Team. Embray pitched over 37 more innings than anyone else for the Sabers. He tossed 62 innings while going 8-2 with a superb .90 ERA while striking out 98 batters and walking only 19. Opponents only had a .150 batting average against him.

He was no slouch at the plate either, hitting .440 with 4 homers and 32 RBI. He also had a .567 on-base percentage, went 33 for 34 stealing bases, and struck out only twice in 75 at bats.

He is joined by a pair of area players on the Second Team: Moravia third baseman Tucker Babbit and Sigourney outfielder Avery Moore.

Babbit finished a great junior year in which he led Moravia with a .413 batting average and a .570 on-base percentage. He hit the only home run on the season for the Mohawks while driving in 23. He was also a thief on the basepaths, going 23 for 25 in swipes. He also did some work on the mound, going 4-2 with a 2.22 ERA as the #3 pitcher in the Moravia rotation.

Moore was a great multi-sport athlete and he wraps up his senior season with an All-State Second Team honor. Moore hit .477 in 2017, hitting a homer with 19 runs batted in. He went 35 for 35 in steals and reached base at a .578 clip. He scored 39 runs on the season in just 23 games for Sigourney.

There were no area players named in Class 2A, but there were four players from the area in Class 3A.

On the First Team, Pella’s junior catcher Jaden Rolffs and senior utility player Tyler Hillman were both honored.

Rolffs was the best hitter for the Dutch in 2017, batting .450 with a .522 on-base percentage. He hit 3 home runs with a team-leading 38 RBI. He also walked twice as many times as he struck out.

Hillman finished a great senior season where he was excellent on the mound while doing more than his share of damage at the plate. He went 5-3 with a 2.20 ERA as the Pella ace. At the dish he hit .400 with a team-leading 6 homers with 33 runs driven in. He had a .511 on-base percentage and walked a team-high 23 times.

On the All-State Second Team in Class 3A, Oskaloosa outfielder Tyler Miller and Grinnell shortstop Ethan Mitchell made the team.

Miller finished an outstanding freshman campaign that saw him lead the state qualifying Indians with a .444 batting average. He reached base at a .492 clip while driving in 22 runs. He also led the way in steals with a 23 for 27 mark.

Mitchell helped lead Grinnell’s bounceback season with a .409 average, a .485 on-base percentage, 2 homers, and 36 RBI, all team-highs. The junior was 11 for 13 in steals and also contributed on the mound with a 4-4 record and a 3.32 ERA.

Finally, Ottumwa senior Austin Shotts was named to the All-State Second Team in Class 4A as the third baseman. Shotts batted .476 with a .563 on-base percentage. He hit one homer with a team-leading 25 RBI. He walked 19 times to only 10 strikeouts and went 17 for 21 in stolen bases. He also went 4-2 on the mound with a 2.12 ERA.

It was a successful summer sports season and these players were the cream of the crop on the baseball diamond in our listening area.

Sigourney, Montezuma Lead Area All-State Softball Honorees in Class 1A

Our final look at summer sports honors is today with the Class 1A All-State softball teams.

On the First Team, Sigourney junior Autum Barthelman was honored after a great season in which she used her bat and her speed. Barthelman hit .480 with 8 triples and went 43 for 43 stealing bases for the state tournament qualifying Savages.

Her teammate Kendall Streigle made the Second Team. Streigle was the pitcher for Sigourney and is the only senior the team loses from their 4th place finish in 2017.

Two other South Iowa Cedar League players made the Second Team All-State list: North Mahaska junior Mallory Klinker and Tri-County senior Katlyn Little.

Klinker had a huge year for the Warhawks, batting .451 with a team leading 5 home runs and 5 triples. Little went huge her senior year for the Trojans, hitting .459 and doing a great job as the ace pitcher, holding an ERA of just 1.85 and striking out 154 in 136 innings.

Another trio of players made the Third Team: BGM sophomore Kelsey Lint, Lynnville-Sully senior Brenna Lanser, and Montezuma junior Cassidy Watts.

Lint was a .425 hitter in 2017 while leading the Bears with 25 RBI. She also was the ace pitcher with an ERA of 1.83 and 222 strikeouts in 176 innings.

Lanser helped the Hawks have a nice bounceback season, hitting .363 with a team leading 10 doubles, 4 homers and 27 RBI. She also struck out only eight times while going 15 for 16 in steals.

Watts was an important piece to Monte’s first ever state tourney qualifying team as the everyday catcher, but her offensive numbers were big as well. She hit .397 with a team-leading 7 triples, 4 homers, and 34 runs driven in. She also was 13 for 13 in steals on the year.

The Honorable Mention list is long as well, with a few players named from the area.

BGM senior Aimee Hochstetler, English Valleys junior Audrey Grove, the Melcher-Dallas pair of 8th grader Riley Enfield and sophomore Emillie Krpan, Montezuma junior Hanna Jones, the North Mahaska duo of sophomore Emma Deucore and senior Jenson Kelderman, and Sigourney sophomore Summer Barthelman were all named Honorable Mention All-State.

Several Area Baseball Players Honored on Class 1A and 2A All-District Teams

Today, it’s time to take a look at who excelled on the baseball diamond in Class 1A and 2A and earned All-District nominations from the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association.

In Class 1A, all of our honorees fell into the Southeast District.

On the First Team, Twin Cedars senior pitcher Trace Embray made the team after going 7-2 in 2017. Embray wraps up an impressive career that began as an important piece to an undefeated championship team in 2014.

Joining him on the First Team is a pair of Moravia Mohawks, also out of the Bluegrass Conference. Junior Tucker Babbitt batted .419 and was named as the First Team 3rd baseman, while Mateo Varese hit .403, went 5-2 on the mound, and was listed as a utility player on the top squad.

To wrap up our area players on the First Team, three players representing three different schools out of the South Iowa Cedar League were honored. Sigourney’s Avery Moore and BGM’s Keegan James were both outstanding this season and both were listed in outfield spots, while Lynnville-Sully’s Tyler Van Zante had a good all-around year at the plate and on the mound en route to being named to a utility player spot.

On the Second Team, there is a huge chunk of players from the area.

Pekin leads the way with four honorees. Senior pitcher Garrett Greiner, sophomore shortstop Tanner Bainbridge, senior outfielder Jake Huff, and junior utility player Torell Washington all were named to the Second Team for the Panthers.

Moravia, Sigourney, BGM, and Lynnville-Sully had more honorees on the Second Team as well.

Moravia’s junior pitcher Griffin Cosgrove went 5-0 on the mound and was nominated to the second squad.

The Sigourney duo of sophomore catcher Carson Crawford and sophomore outfielder Mac Conrad also made the cut for the Savages who reached a district final.

BGM had a trio of nominations. Senior catcher Dylan Shafbuch, senior 3rd baseman Eric Weiss, and junior utility player Kyle Doty all made the second team.

Rounding out our listening area athletes in Class 1A is a tandem of Lynnville-Sully upperclassmen. Senior outfielder Caden Dunsbergen and junior utility player Elijah Collins have starred in multiple sports for the Hawks and that continued on the diamond with Second Team All-Southeast District honors in 2017.

In Class 2A, only three area players made lists, and all three were listed in different districts.

The lone First Team honoree is Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont junior KJ McCrea, who was listed as the Southeast District shortstop after batting .436 this season.

In the Central District, PCM junior pitcher Noah Henkenius went 6-1 and was named to the Second Team, while Pleasantville’s sophomore catcher Cael Lester hit .429 en route to being named to the Second Team of the Southwest District.

It was an extremely successful baseball season for our listening area, and that was directly reflected by the amount of players that were named by the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association as All-District athletes.

Oskaloosa and Sigourney To Play In Third Place Game

After each dropping their semifinal games to tough opponents, the Indians and the Savages look to end their seasons on high notes by winning their respective 3rd place consolation games.

In the first game of the day on Thursday morning, Oskaloosa ran up against a defensively stout Winterset team. Winterset, the number one seed in 4A, was a defensive machine, only giving up one run early in the game. This run gave Oskaloosa an early 1-0 lead, but it would not be enough. Winterset made defensive play after defensive play, and finally broke through with their hitting in the 6th inning, with some help from untimely errors from the Indians. Before Osky knew it, they were down 3-1 and down to their last out. Winterset would go on to win the game and advance to the 4A championship. Oskaloosa advances to the 3rd place game, where they will take on #7 Charles City at 9:30 am with pre-game starting at 9:15 on 99.5 FM 740AM, radiokmzn.com, and the KMZN mobile app. If Oskaloosa defeats Charles City, they will set the school record for wins in a season.

Sigourney played in most likely the craziest shootout Fort Dodge has ever seen. After Sigourney and Clarkesville put up two runs in the first inning, a lightning delay side lined the action for an hour and a half. When played resumed, an absolute barn burner broke out, and both teams fought tooth and nail for a chance to advance to the Class 1A Final. The game ended up in a 9th inning, with a tournament record 40 hits between the two teams, and Clarksville setting an individual team record with 26 hits. After a three run shot in the top of the 9th, Clarksville found themselves with a 15-12 lead, and they finally finished the game to advance to the finals. Savages stun the Westerners at State

One of the biggest stories going into this year’s Class 1A State Championship Tournament was the potential rematch between Kee High and Akron-Westfield in the Championship game. The Spoiler Savages of Sigourney dashed any hope of that happening as  they defeated Akron-Westfield, 7-3, Monday afternoon in the 1st Round of the State Tourney.

Sigourney (23-11) came into the contest as a 7-Seed and heavy underdog to the 2-Seed Westerners of Akron-Westfield (35-3). However, that didn’t stop the Savages from playing with confidence and composure the whole game. It started in the 1st inning when, after a shutdown inning defensively, the Savages jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after Autum Barthelman hit in her sister Summer to score the first run of the game for the Savages. Sigourney would go on to score a couple more runs in the 1st to push it to 3-0 Savages after 1. The Westerners would strike back, however, with a pair of runs in the 3rd. The Savages would enter the 4th with a 3-2 lead and exit with a 6-2 lead after nice RBI’s by Summer Barthelman and Kendall Striegel and some costly errors committed by the Westerners. Akron Westfield added a run in the 5th and Sigourney put another one on the board in the 6th to make the score 7-3 going into the 7th and final inning. Kendall Striegel set down the Westerners in order to end the 7th and put a cap on a terrific day for her in the circle where she allowed just 3 earned runs against a team that boasted 4 of the top 5 hitters in the tournament for Class 1A. The many Sigourney fans that made the trip to Rogers Sports Complex erupted after the final out was recorded as their team continued its improbable postseason run.

Next the Savages play the 3-Seed in the Class 1A tournament, Clarkesville (28-2), on Thursday at 7:30 PM on Diamond 2 at Rogers Sports Complex. The Savages will look to pull of yet another upset this postseason when they take on an Indians squad that went undefeated in conference play in the Iowa Star Conference and posses an outstanding freshman pitcher Kori Wedeking who went 22-1 this year with an ERA of 0.69. The No Coast Network will have coverage of the Class 1A State Semifinal game starting with game time tentatively set for 7:30 PM. The pregame show is set for around 7:15 on 104.9 FM KBOE, kboeradio.com, and the KBOE mobile app with John Hirl and Mitch Eslick.

No Coast Network Announces Broadcast Lineup for State Softball Tournament

State softball is on deck and five area teams will be playing for state titles in four different classes.

All the action on the No Coast Network begins Monday morning around 10:45 on 104.9 FM KBOE, kboeradio.com, and the KBOE mobile app. In Class 1A, #8 Montezuma will face #1 Kee in the first game on Buena Vista University Diamond at the Rogers Sports Complex in Fort Dodge. Monte enters at 19-12 while Kee is 35-2.

Following that contest on the same field at around 3 PM will be #7 Sigourney vs. #2 Akron-Westfield. That game will also be broadcast on 104.9 FM KBOE, kboeradio.com, and the KBOE mobile app. Sigourney is 22-11 entering the tourney and Akron-Westfield is 35-2.

Not too long after that will be the Class 2A quarterfinal between #6 Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont and #3 Waterloo Columbus Catholic. First pitch is on Diamond 2 around 5:30 PM Monday evening. The Rockets will be playing on 104.9 FM KBOE, kboeradio.com, and the KBOE mobile app just before the first pitch. If the Sigourney game is still going on prior to first pitch, the game will begin on 99.5 FM/740 AM KMZN, radiokmzn.com, and the KMZN mobile app. EBF enters at 30-8, with Columbus Catholic entering at 34-5.

Tuesday morning, #7 Albia takes the field in the Class 3A bracket. The Lady Dees are playing #2 Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley. First pitch is at 11 AM on Buena Vista University Diamond. Albia goes into the tournament at 28-8, and Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley enters at 32-2.

Finally, Oskaloosa will round out our first round games Tuesday afternoon at 3 PM in the Class 4A quarterfinals. The #4 Indians play #5 Mount Pleasant on Buena Vista University Diamond, and that game can be heard on both 104.9 FM KBOE and 99.5 FM/740 AM KMZN. It will also be streamed on both kboeradio.com and radiokmzn.com. Osky goes into the tournament at 29-12 and Mount Pleasant enters at 31-10.

Pella Christian Into District Finals in Baseball

It was a busy night on Tuesday in terms of postseason baseball, as the Class 1A District Quarterfinals and the Class 2A District Semifinals were on tap.

In Class 2A District 11, Pella Christian held off Davis County, 7-6, to get into the district final on Saturday. They’ll play Centerville, who won a slugfest over Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont, 15-11. That matchup will be on Saturday at 7 PM in Centerville.

Also in Class 2A, PCM was in the District 14 semis, but fell to conference foe Roland-Story, 5-0. PCM’s season ends at 16-8.

In Class 1A District 8, in a game heard on 104.9 FM KBOE, Sigourney defeated Iowa Valley in a tight matchup, 7-6. Sigourney will be playing HLV on Thursday in Keota at 5 PM in the district semis. HLV beat English Valleys, 14-2 in 5 innings.

On the other side of that bracket, BGM destroyed Keota, 18-0 in 5 innings. The Bears will play Iowa Mennonite School, who got a 16-0 win over Tri-County Tuesday night. That game will be at 7 PM in Keota on Thursday.

In Class 1A District 10, Pekin beat Cardinal in Riverside, 5-4. The Panthers will play Highland in Riverside on Thursday night at 7 PM.

District 11 is loaded with area teams, and three local schools won their matchups. Moravia beat Moulton-Udell, 11-0 in 5 innings. They’ll play Lynnville-Sully in the semifinals, who beat Melcher-Dallas, 3-0. That game is in Bussey Thursday at 5 PM.

Colfax-Mingo and Twin Cedars will play in the other semifinal in Bussey Thursday at 7 PM. The Sabers beat North Mahaska, 6-5, while Colfax-Mingo defeated Montezuma, 12-2 in 5 innings.

Montezuma, Sigourney, EBF, Albia All Qualify for State Softball Tournament

The softball regional finals did not disappoint in our listening area on Monday night as four games produced four area teams qualifying for state.

In a game heard on 99.5 FM/740 AM KMZN, radiokmzn.com, and the KMZN mobile app, the Montezuma Bravettes took on Fort Dodge St. Edmond in a most improbable matchup. After three quick, scoreless innings, Monte would plate three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings and another run in the sixth. A solo home run would be all the Gaels could match in that span. Eventually, Monte would get the final out and win by a score of 7-1. Bravette pitcher Hanna Jones would only surrender one run on three hits in the game.

Montezuma will be the #8 seed in Class 1A and will face #1 seed Kee in the quarterfinals on Monday at 11 AM.

On 104.9 FM KBOE, kboeradio.com, and the KBOE mobile app, the Sigourney Savages looked to upset #3 Martensdale-St. Marys on the road. The Savages would score two runs early, but Martensdale-St. Marys would battle back and tie the game. Sigourney would hang tough and walk-it-off in the bottom of the 7th to advance to state with the upset.

Sigourney will be the #7 seed and will face #2 seed and perennial powerhouse Akron-Westfield Monday at 3 PM.

Joining Montezuma and Sigourney at state are Colfax-Mingo and Belle Plaine, who found ways to win their respective regions as well. That means that four of the eight teams in the Class 1A state tournament bracket are out of the South Iowa Cedar League, a conference that had zero teams ranked in the top ten heading into the postseason.

In Class 2A Region 6, Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont travelled to Pella Christian High School to face the #4 team in the state and picked up a 4-1 win to get back to state for the first time since 2014. They’ll be the #6 seed in Class 2A and face #3 seed Waterloo Columbus Catholic on Monday at 5:30 PM.

In Class 3A Region 7, Albia went on the road to face Solon and got a big upset win, 11-3. The Lady Dees have shown the ability to play with anyone and they’ll get a chance as the #7 seed in the Class 3A bracket. They’ll play #2 seed Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley in the quarters on Tuesday at 11 AM.

Tonight, the Class 4A and 5A Regional Finals will be decided. Among them is the Class 4A Region 5 Final between the Oskaloosa Indians and the Burlington Greyhounds tonight at 7 PM. You can hear that contest live on 99.5 FM/740 AM KMZN, radiokmzn.com, and the KMZN mobile app starting at 6:45 PM.

Also, the Ottumwa Bulldogs will be on the road to face top-ranked Waukee in the Class 5A Region 1 Final. That game is at 7 PM as well.

Softball Regional Finals To Be Decided Monday and Tuesday Nights

Over the next two days, 40 schools will punch their ticket to the Iowa High School Softball State Tournament at Harlan Rogers Park in Fort Dodge. In the No Coast Network listening area, there are seven who are looking to do just that.

On Monday night, Class 1A, 2A, and 3A will all be looking to raise a banner.

Class 1A Region 3 is one of the most incredible matchups in the state, as Montezuma (18-12) will host Fort Dodge St. Edmond (12-17). Monte finished the season strong but still had to win a play-in game against Tri-County, which they barely survived in walkoff fashion last Monday, 4-3. Then, the Bravettes came from behind to walkoff again on Wednesday, this time against North Mahaska, 2-1 in 10 innings. They made things a little easier on themselves last Friday, exploding late to defeat Lynnville-Sully on the road, 10-4.

Now, they’ll play one of the unlikeliest of regional finalists in Fort Dodge St. Edmond. The Gaels started their run last Monday by beating Coon Rapids-Bayard, 3-2, in a game at Harlan Rogers Park. The big upset occurred last Wednesday, as they defeated #5 Newell-Fonda, 8-6, in Fonda. They kept up the momentum on Friday, waltzing past Exira/Elk Horn-Kimballton, 9-2.

These two will do battle on 99.5 FM/740 AM KMZN, radiokmzn.com, and the KMZN mobile app, beginning at 6:45 PM for the 7 PM first pitch in Montezuma.

In Class 1A Region 7, Sigourney (21-11) has to go on the road to face #3 Martensdale-St. Marys to get to state. The Savages have held serve throughout in the bottom half of the bracket, getting a 7-1 win over Winfield-Mount Union on Wednesday and a 6-5 win over New London on Friday, both at home.

Martensdale-St. Marys (32-3) dominated in their first game against Southeast Warren, 12-0, but faced a stiff test against Wayne before surviving, 4-3.

That game can be heard on 104.9 FM KBOE, kboeradio.com, and the KBOE mobile app at 6:45 PM for the 7 PM first pitch in Martensdale.

In Class 2A Region 6, two area teams will duke it out for one trip to state. #4 Pella Christian (32-5) will host #9 Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont (29-8) in Pella. These two teams haven’t seen each other yet this year, but have a great rivalry in other sports.

EBF has been ranked as high as #2 this season and seemed destined to comfortably sit at the top of their region, but after some confusion with the IGHSAU, regions needed shuffled and a white-hot Pella Christian was added to the Rockets’ bracket. After both teams strolled through the first two rounds, they now find themselves needing one win to make it to Fort Dodge. First pitch in Pella is at 7 PM.

Region 7 in Class 3A features #9 Albia (27-8) travelling to face #6 Solon (30-12). Albia has a ton of youth and has shown great growth all season long. Solon has been there and done that, qualifying for state on a near-yearly basis. These two will lock horns in Solon at 7 PM.

On Tuesday night, just two area teams will be looking to advance to state.

Class 4A Region 5 sees the defending state champion and fifth-ranked Oskaloosa Indians (28-12) hosting #7 Burlington (22-17). Osky breezed past Washington in the semifinals to get to this point, hosting another regional final. They’ll face Burlington, a perennially ranked team in Class 5A who dropped down to 4A this year. The Greyhounds had to sweat it out in the semis, needing extras to down North Scott at home on Saturday, 3-1.

That game can be heard live from the Oskaloosa Softball Field at 6:45 PM on 99.5 FM/740 AM KMZN, radiokmzn.com, and the KMZN mobile app. First pitch Tuesday night is at 7 PM.

Finally, the Ottumwa Bulldogs (26-14) will look to keep up a strong tradition under Head Coach Frank Huston and get back to state. The #11 Bulldogs will face top-ranked Waukee (37-3-1) on the road Tuesday night. Both teams won by double-digits in their first postseason game and it will be sure to be a heavyweight fight in Waukee on Tuesday night, with the first pitch at 7 PM.

Pella Christian, Lynnville-Sully Among Teams Advancing in Boys’ Basketball

Tournament action continued in boys’ basketball on Tuesday night, and a few area teams were victorious, and a few ended their season.

In Class 1A District 10, Lynnville-Sully defeated Belle Plaine, 54-38. The Hawks will advance to the District 10 Final on Thursday against Meskwaki Settlement School, who defeated BGM, 75-57. That game will be in Marshalltown Thursday at 6:30 PM.

In Class 1A District 11, as heard on the Mahaska Zone Network, Keota defeated Sigourney, 61-53, to advance to the District 11 Final. They will face Montezuma, who beat Wayne, 61-37. That matchup will be in Wellman at 7 PM on Thursday, and can be heard on 99.5 FM/740 AM KMZN, the KMZN mobile app, and radiokmzn.com.

In Class 2A District 11, Pekin made a good run, but fell to West Burlington in the District Final, 56-52. Meeting West Burlington in the Class 2A Substate 6 Final will be Pella Christian, who defeated Albia Tuesday, 58-33. The Substate 6 Final will be contested at Fairfield High School on Saturday at 7 PM. The winner will advance to the Class 2A Boys’ Basketball State Tournament at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
